李公麟（公元一○四九——一一○六年），字伯时，生于仁宗皇祐元年，是崔白、郭熙初露头角的年代。熙宁三年（公元一○七○年）登进士第，到哲宗元符三年（公元一一○○年），患风湿病，退休住在家乡安徽舒城自己的庄园“龙眠山庄”，自称“龙眠居士”，在徽宗崇宁五年（公元一一○六年）去世。
　　
　　李公麟作官三十年，也是他的艺术逐渐成熟，成为名画家的时期：这一时期也正是王安石变法失败，转入史称“朋党”之争的时期。李公麟和王安石的关系很好，熙宁七年以后，王安石失势，退居金陵，曾与李公麟同游，并赠诗四首，但同时，李公麟和反对王安石的苏轼等关系也很亲密。
　　
　　李公麟和苏轼、黄庭坚、米芾等人同是驸马王诜家的座上客。他们在王诜家里的聚会曾被纪录在李公麟画的《西园雅集图》（现存各种摹本）中，米芾也为此写了一篇文章。他们十几个人在王诜家的花园中饮酒、作诗、写字画画、谈禅、论道等等。这是他们交游的第一个时期，是在苏轼被黜，离开汴梁去杭州作官以前。元丰七年（公元一○八四年）苏轼因作诗遭祸，陷入险境，王诜也被诛连，据说李公麟在街上遇见苏家人，就以扇遮面，因而受到人们的讥笑。李公麟和苏轼等人第二次交游是在哲宗元祐年间，那时王安石已经去世，正是旧党短期得势，而苏轼又恢复了自己的政治地位的时候，李公麟又画了第二幅《西园雅集图》。苏轼和黄庭坚的诗集中载多首赠诗和称赞他作品的诗。
　　
　　李公麟对于古代的美术修养极深。对古器物和古文字具有知识，曾摹绘古代的铜器并加以考订，他参加了整理皇家收藏的古器物的工作。他的父亲李虚一收藏古代画迹很多，他都进行临摹，并且也临摹了很多他人收藏的名迹。他保存了很多自己临摹前代名画的副本。
　　
　　他的绘画才能，首先表现在他的题材的多样性上。他擅长鞍马、佛像、人物和山水。他在临摹古人名迹中掌握了绘画技法，而越出古人的成法。
　　
　　李公麟擅长画马和人物。他画的人物，据说能够从外貌上区别出“廊庙馆阁、山林草野、闾阎臧获、台舆皂隶”等社会各阶层人的特点，并能分别出地域和种族的具体特点，及动作表情的各种具体状态。他的艺术创造有生活现实性为基础，所以他敢于追求新的表现。他敢于突破前人的定式，画长带观音，飘带长过一身有半，还画过石上卧观音，这些都是他创造的新式样。他的创造性还表现在他对题材的理解上，他画“观自在观音”，不是按照一般流行的坐相，他说“自在在心，不在相”，不必限制于某一固定的坐相，而是另创一种他认为能表现出心情自在的坐相。他画陶潜的“归去来辞”一诗把表现的重点放在正在思维中的神态上，不在一般化的描写田园松菊等自然风物，而注重描绘“临清流处”——发人深思的流水。

　　从以上文字记载中知道他的作品大多是插图性质的。如《孝经图》、《离骚九歌图》、《君臣故实图》、《华严变相图》、《三清图》、《郭子仪单骑降虏图》、《维摩演教图》、《蕃王礼佛图》等等。这些题目告诉我们，其内容是儒家的或佛教道教的经典故事。
　　
　　他的作品现存已很少。《五马图》是一件重要作品，他创造了五匹矫健的骏马的形象，成功地描写了马的外形，并充分的表现了马的内在特点。单线勾出了马的整个外形轮廓，身体的重量感，各部分的质感，甚至光泽的效果（图245）。他也画了五个牵马的人，其中牵了“凤头骢”的于阗国人是一个健壮的、朴质沉着的外族人的形象。
